How To Grow As A Writer

What is writing?

Writing is a medium of human communication that involves the representation of a language with symbols. Writing systems are not themselves human languages; they are means of rendering a language into a form that can be reconstructed by other humans separated by time and/or space.

What is Good Writing?

We write because we are reacting to someone or something. While writing can feel like an isolating, individual act—just you and the computer or pad of paper—it is really a social act, a way in which we respond to the people and world around us. Writing happens in specific, often prescribed contexts. We are not just writing—we are always writing to an audience(s) for some particular purpose. When we write, we do so because we want, need, or have been required to create a fixed space for someone to receive and react to our ideas. Understanding this social or rhetorical context—who our readers may be, why they want to read our ideas, when and where they will be reading, how they might view us as writers—governs some of the choices we make. The writing context requires writers to have a sense of the reader’s expectations and an awareness of conventions for a particular piece of writing. The context of the piece further determines the appropriate tone, level of vocabulary, kind and placement of evidence, genre, and sometimes even punctuation.

Writing is a Process

Each writer has an idiosyncratic combination of thinking, planning, drafting, and revising that means “writing” something. No matter how we each describe our writing process (e.g., “First I think about my idea then dump thoughts onto the computer,” or “I make an outline then work out topic sentences”), we all (usually unconsciously) negotiate the series of choices required in an individual context and produce a draft that begins to capture a representation of our ideas.

As a rookie writer, you must know what to write and what not to write. Yes there is room for mistakes, so don't stress over it and continue writing! Know the rules so you grow! Writing is not easy, anyone can write but not everyone has a talent for it. If you think you have the talent to write then do the honor and start to write.

Writing Problems?

Writing problems rarely occur in isolation, and improvements in writing go hand in hand with the development of other non-writing-specific skills. Thus, a problem with the development in one of these areas is likely to interfere with a child's progress as a writer.

Like all learning problems, difficulties in writing can be devastating to a child's education and self-esteem. As children progress through school, they are increasingly expected to express what they know about many different subjects through writing. If a child fails to develop certain basic skills, he will be unable to write with the speed and fluency required to excel as these demands increase. Indeed, for a child struggling with a writing problem, the writing process itself interferes with learning. Students faced with such difficult odds have trouble staying motivated.

THE 7 STEPS TO GROW AS A WRITER

STEP 1 - Start of thinking about a topic.

Knowing what to write about is the first step to think about when you want to start writing. Write about something that inspires you, something that makes you happy. May it be about your interest, hobby, love life, friends, family and etc.

Always keep in mind that in choosing a topic, you must choose from the heart. Always write what is in your heart.

STEP 2 - Start writing keywords.

Have atleast two to three keywords about your topic. Know what to write, study about it, research about it. Lookup past experiences and memories from the back of your mind. Be creative! Start with writing keywords and then progress into sentences. After having a few sentences, there you have it, you have now a paragraph.

STEP 3 - Write daily.

if you want to grow as a writer, you have to practice. As the saying goes... practice makes perfect! Even if its just a few paragraphs, you have to write something. Slow progress is still progress, get typing!

STEP 4 - Utilize prompts!

Sometimes we need inspirations or help to get our creative minds flowing, therefore we need to look up prompts that might help us. Prompts help us think of a new way to write or what kind of piece you should do. You can find many prompts in Pinterest, just create an account and its free or here in my page!

STEP 4 - Read good books!

Read books that inspire you, books that bring magic to your life, books that bring out you creativity and books that sharpen you mind. Read from authors who create a great impact and has made many impeccable pieces. Observe their style and learn from them. To grow as a writer, you have to observe and learn from a writer. Start reading!

STEP 5 - Get feedback.

Even the best writers have someone to proofread their work, as a rookie... ask your reader friends to read your piece and ask for their honest feedback. Prepare yourself for some criticism, it will help you grow as a writer!

STEP 6 - Take a Course.

What other way to learn how to write? Take a course on writing! Invest in your passion because this will be your asset someday. Especially in grammar and what proper words to use.
